Treeless View from the Mountain Road

The Majestic Kohala Mountains were once blanketed in expansive native forests. Today, the bald surface provides food for cattle, and clear coastal views. Most things come at a price- and this is a prime example.  Three 6x9s matted in a 12" x 36" mat.  Framing suggestions available.

stormy weather

I love capturing the sea in all its many moods- this one happens to be a favorite.  When the rough winter waters are veiled in the mists of frequent squalls, the salty air seems full of mystery.  Walking on the beach, shrouded by those mists, one feels suspended in time.

Pololu Reflections I

This shot was taken after the last rain before a drought.  Not long after, the muddy valley floor was cracked and resembled a desert.  It doesn't take a very long dry spell to spell disaster for those reliant upon water: namely farmers.  The image here reminds me of how fragile the lushness really is.

2006 quake cloud vi

One of the last in the series of frames taken of the Sunday, October 15th, 2006 earthquake.  My favorite image of that momentous day; the sepia tone effect that the dust had on the coastlal view creates a sense of otherworldliness.  The amount of earth that fell into the ocean that day all along the coast must have been enormous.  Thousands of boulders went from occupying ocean view real estate to ocean floor living, as new peninsulas were formed in seconds.

Mokupuku, Paokalani, and Paalaea in the moon's spotlight.

The small islands of Mokupuku, Paokalani, and Paalaea are silhouetteed in the moon's spotlight.  Billowing clouds add to the drama of a late night show in rural Hawaii.

The after-sunset glow from Ako'ako'a point on this particular evening was a rich indigo ombre, which I was not sure I had captured- until the slides were developed.  Marcus' trusty tripod was definitely a necessary piece of equipment for this shot.

quake cloud iii

Of the coastal landslide images taken that early Sunday morning, this is the most dramatic.  The 6.7 magnitude earthquake on October 15, 2006 was quite a sensational experience- one that has been hard to top.  The horizontal motion combined with the duration of the shake loosened large amounts of our fairly loose volcanic soils, returning part of the island to the sea.
